Subject: Please protect children in the new domestic violence law

Dear [TD or Senator name], I am writing as a constituent in [your area]. Ireland must bring the EU directive on violence against women and domestic violence fully into Irish law by 14 June 2027. The rules on child victims have not yet been drafted. As it stands, EU law counts children as victims only if they can show they were harmed by witnessing domestic violence. Ireland is free to go further. I am asking you to: 1. Support a law that recognises every child exposed to domestic violence as a victim in their own right, without having to prove harm and whether or not a case goes to court. 2. Ask the Minister for Justice which law will carry the directive’s rules on child victims, and when it will be published.
